RULES FOR 2010 SLALOM CHAMPIONSHIP
When you start a timed run you must enter and exit the 4 buoys
marked start & finish on the picture shown above. If you
enter or exit the course other than shown your time will not
be counted. On buoy number 9 this one can be turned in whatever
direction as a left or right turn buoy. At each event each class
will have one practice run and 2 timed runs, only your fastest
time out of the 2 runs will count in that class.
The classes are:
Stand up
2 Seater
3 Seater
Top speed run can be any ski.
The points will be from 12 for first, down to 1 point for last
place. Only the top 3 scoring members of each club in each class
will collect points, this way smaller clubs have as good a chance.
The total points have been increased from 9 in each class to
12 as there are 4 clubs taking part.
There will be prizes for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places in all 4 classes
at each event courtesy of
Jet Products and Yamaha UK.
When warming up your ski please do it away from the S1 course
as your wake will hurt other competitor’s times.

have now been errected at the slipways stating all jetskis are
banned on the river in Limerick!! Its going to take a lot of
work and quiet some time to get an alternative to the complete
ban accepted but we are working on it!! We are going to see
this more and more and to make your choices better you need
to do your training course ASAP!! The only way we see to the
councils allowing proper skiers on the waters through a Permit
scheme like some other councils are running but you will need

BAN ON
LOUGH DERG ALMOST A REALITY
In the middle of September a
number of Jetskiers traveled from Limerick to Dromineer and
caused havoc out there!! There were complaints to the Gardai,
Waterways Ireland, ISA etc etc and a lot of calls for a ban
to be put on jetskis on Loughderg. We have been told that the
ban was actually being put in place only for the intervention
of Denis Dillon on behalf of the ISA and ourselves. Since then
we have done a presentation for Waterways Ireland which was
very informative for both sides and we are now organising to
do a presentaion in Dromineer and also meetings with Clare and
North Tipp County Councils. If you have any questions email

Aran Island Outing June 2009
"I honestly can say, I never thought that one could have
felt like they were out on a foreign holiday whilst staying
in Ireland"
Clubs: Lough Derg Jet ski Club and South Meath Jet Ski Club
Venue: Doolin - Inisheer
Dates: 12 - 14 June 2009
No of Jet skis: 14
I have been a member of the Lough Derg Jet ski club for over
a year at this stage and I am ashamed to say that last weekend
was my first outing with the club but I have to say it was worth
the wait. It was a well organised, family orientated and adventurous
weekend. Most launched in Doolin on the Friday evening and enjoyed
the very scenic slightly choppy trip across and on arrival set
up camp, the campsite being in walking distance of the beach
- very convenient. The beach was fabulous, the water was two
shades of blue and the weather was good as the weather in Spain.
After such an eventful evening, a drink was well deserved, so
down to the local pub where a few /a lot enjoyable drinks were
had by all. Social skills in the pub were just as good as that
on the water, a true united club.
The rest followed suit on the Saturday morning, a few of us
availing of the ferry across. We wont mention any names but a
few took advantage of taking an extra trip to see the beautiful
Cliffs of Moher. I definitely can say they would highly recommend
it : ). 14 skis in total invaded Inisheer due to a very good
turn out from both our club and the Meath club. It was a pleasure
having the Meath club there as they made the experience even
more enjoyable. After having a relaxing morning and all introductions
were over, we got the skis organised and headed to Inis Mor.
The trip across was amazing I cant even explain it, 13 skis
made the trip, unfortunately one had to fore-go the trip due
to the tequila morning bug, unfortunately it came out of no
where, nobody else was effected, lucky enough. On slowly entering
Inis Mor, we admired the views and strong presence of tourists.
Once we docked and got the skis safely tied up, we went for
a refreshment in the American bar. Similar to Inisheer there
was a laid back atmosphere and a strong Irish culture presence,
if only we were fluent in Irish. Once refreshed we headed back
safely to the rest of them in Inisheer. Strong marshaling presence
at sea was present at all times. Jon in front, Noel in the middle
and Joe at the back to ensure high safety standards at sea.
While most of us docked, a few took a trip around the island
and done a bit of wavejumping ( Sean - if you wouldn't mind
sending on the photos of the wavejumping -very impressive),
some returned to Doolin to refuel while Greg even done a bit
of snorkeling.
We relaxed for the evening taking advantage of the good weather,
we ventured to the playground where I can honestly say the adults
nearly had as much fun as the kids. Great fun with the children
and young adults!!! A camp fire was lit (thanks Kate for getting
the turf off the boys) and a few light refreshments. All we
were missing were the marshmallows, next time I suppose. A little
trip to the local pub and back to bed as a long enjoyable day
was had by all. (Caroline watch the step). Sunday morning got
off to a slightly dramatic start, a lesson to be learnt that
in the future, the skis will definitely have to be docked some
other way - to be reviewed!!!!! We cleared up and headed on
our merry way. A few of us heading first on the ferry and the
rest following on the skis. I think we all learnt a lot from
the wknd especially when docking the skis
I would like to thank the club for an enjoyable day out for
all involved club members, especially family and friends. A
special thanks to the Meath club for making the trip down. We
truly hoped ye enjoyed yourselves and will meet again on yet
another venture. Thanks to Allen and Alice for all the cooking
facilities, highly organised I say.
A sincere thanks to all involved in making the trip as successful
as it was and cant wait to go again.
Rating: 5 *****
Thanks

Outing report - Ballina
to Limerick
Date: 19th April 2009
Run: Ballina to Limerick City
Everyone was looking forward to this outing as it was the club’s
first outing of the summer. We couldn’t have asked for
a better day, the sun was shining and the water was like a sheet
of glass. A few of us launched at the Ballina slipway and then
headed down to meet the rest that launched at Two Mile Gate.
Looking back, we should have all launched at Two Mile Gate but
we’ll know for next time! We all assembled just past the
bridge in Ballina and we waited for a few minutes to get the
all clear to pass back through the bridge. We had 16 skis on
the water! We headed up towards the dam with Jon O’ Shaughnessy
taking the role of marshall. We waited a few minutes for the
dam to open and then progressed on to the river Shannon. From
here we headed towards Ardnacrusha. We entered the lock at Ardnacrusha
and it took us about 40 – 45 minutes to pass through the
lock. On a personal note, I thought going through Ardnacrusha
lock was a great experience. We cam out of the lock and headed
towards Limerick city. We all assembled just before Limerick
city to ensure we were all together. We headed for the city
and arrived outside the Locke Bar. A few went on just past the
Locke Bar to explore! We all tied up at the Locke Bar and headed
up for a bit of grub. We took a break for about 45 minutes then
packed up, got back on the water and headed out of the city!
A few of us headed back towards the lock at Ardnacrusha while
others were behind experiencing a few ‘technical difficulties’!!
We tied up just outside Ardnacrusha lock while we waited for
the rest of the group to arrive. Eventually they arrived with
enough stories to write a book! We waited for a few minutes
to allow John Sheehan get over his traumatic incident!! We headed
back into Ardnacrusha lock with the hope that Martin’s
ski would start going out! We got through the lock and went
on towards the dam. Some of the crew headed for home while others
were still experiencing some minor problems! We Arrived back
in Ballina about 18.00/18.30 and a great day was had by all!
Lesson of the day: If you are buying a ski from Tom, be aware
that the battery is not included!!!!

Urgent Recall Notice
Killaloe Coast Guard have been advised of a product recall concerning
some 2008 and 2009 year models of Yamaha Water Vehicles (Jet
Skis).
Yamaha Water Vehicles, models FX1800-G/H and FX1800A-G/H.Risk:
Fire and Explosion - In the affected watercraft, there is the
potential for the fuel hose to come loose from the pipe joint
at the fuel rail on the engine. If this happens, fuel could
spray into the engine compartment, increasing the risk of fire
or explosion resulting in severe injury or death to the operator,
passenger, or bystanders.
We encourage all jet ski owners to check their watercraft against
the ID number range of affected vehicles before further use.
Hi lads,
Just a few lines regarding the recent trip to Villierstown in
Co. Cork.
click
here to view photos
Off to an early start (8am to be precise) we headed out the
Tipperary Road to meet up with another couple of lads and continued
on to Caherconlish Filling Station where we met up with the
rest of the crew (some with families along for what promised
to be a great day out). With some last minute checks and some
minor running repairs (thanks Martin) we were on our way.
The drive down on what were fairly good roads was pretty uneventful
apart from the few people who stood and pointed at what was
a mini convoy of jetskis! That said, the closer we got to Cork
the more scenic the route got. Just outside Mitchelstown we
met another one of the lads who made his way down (Greg Shortt)
to increase the size of our convoy. Shortly afterwards we were
joined by Tom Twomey and his son Garreth with two other local
lads, all tolled we were 12 strong heading for Villierstown
Quay. Tom with local knowledge, drove through what used to be
a private estate many years ago and on entering we came across
a gateway that looked like something straight out of an Indiana
Jones movie. The estate owner apparently had the entire
structure imported from India many years ago.
On arriving at our destination we were greeted by the River
Blackwater (a very wide stretch of water) with very easy access
via the gently sloping strip and on the quayside public benches
were available in abundance. After a couple of the lads got
in the water to help with the launching it all happened pretty
quickly and in no time we were all set. A few lads decided to
stay aroun the fresh water (knee boarding and pulling donuts,
great fun) and some of us headed for the salty stuff, and made
haste for the sea at Youghal Bay just a short 20 mins or so
away. Youghal itself had some small sandy beaches if you wanted
to stop for a while before heading out into what were some really
nice size waves for jumping. The beauty of this spot is that
you had the best of both worlds, waves on the sea or flat fresh
water 5 or 10 mins back inland (brilliant). After about an hour
or so horsing about in the waves (ok, it felt like an hour to
me, my arms were hanging off! Ha.) we turned back towards Youghal
to some calmer water where some of the lads had a bite to eat
moored at a nice little spot in Youghal Bay. (those who brought
their grub with them did anyway!). The rest of us made tracks
for the quay where we had left our gear. The lads there were
still cutting up water with craic to be had towing a ring behind
you with a couple of screaming kids behind you enjoying every
minute of it. After a bite to eat and a bit of a laugh and a
joke we got back on the skis and turned up river towards Cappaquinn
under 2 bridges and a short spin along a scenic stretch of river,
we still had plenty of water at the slip for retrieving the
skis.
Again with everybody off the water safely and everything going
without a hitch I think I can speak for everybody who came along
on the day that a great time was had by all, the location was
very picturesque with some really scenic stretches of water
and to top it off a short spin to the sea. I'd safely say we'll
be down Youghal way again in the not too distant future. To
all who turned up on the day a big thank you for a great day
out and a special thank you to Tom Twomey for his invitation
to this particularly beautiful part of the country. And for
those members who couldn't make it, maybe next time! (I'D RECOMMEND
IT!)
Regards.
Alf.

UNFORGETTABLE RUN TO ATHLONE
click
here to view photos
Date: Sunday 20th July 2008
Launch Point: Dromineer, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.
Time: 9 AM (approx)
Objective: Ski to Athlone and Back
The time, date and venue were set. All we needed were people
and their Ski's.
We arrived at Dromineer around 9:10AM to be greeted by the every
early Joe Doolan, who had his Ski in the water and was suited
up ready for the day ahead. Once the formalities like sign on
and final safety checks were done we got on the water by 10
AM. We headed out straight across for Portumna with Noel taking
the role of Marshall for the first part of the trip. He was
followed in a V shape formation by Joe (with Mikey on the Back),
Allen, Jon and Mark. We arrived in Portumna to the beautiful
sight of the River Shannon, the water like a sheet of glass.
We then proceeded on to Meelick Lock and after about 10 minutes
waiting for the lock to open, and taking a short break from
the skis, we headed on up the Shannon.
Next we hit Banagher Co. Offaly, we didn't stop though as time
was pushing on. Then Shannon Bridge where we forced to stop
for a refuel (although in hind sight, he reckons he would have
made it all the way to Athlone). Next we navigated through some
wonderful parts of the river, incorporating some tricky tight
S bends and some careful manoeuvring around the many Cruisers
on the water. We arrived to Athlone Lock and moored for a few
minutes while we waited for the lock to empty. Eventually at
around 1PM we moored in Athlone Harbour and decided some some
fodder was well overdue.
After refuelling ourselves, we thought it to be a grand idea
to do the same to our Skis. Unfortunately that didn't quite
go to plan since the only filling station in town had no fuel.
Panic Stations, or at least we thought so. The nearest station
with fuel was at least a mile and a half outside the town. So
our options were few and far between, (get a taxi out and back
for fuel or chance making it back to Shannon Bridge on what
we had in our tanks. So we decided on the later and headed back
down the river. Lucky for us we all made it down without hitting
reserve, and we refuelled no problem. The station was only a
5 min walk from the harbour.
So we headed back down and arrived back in Dromineer around
6 PM much to everyone's delight, (we were all knackered). And
according to everyones reaction on their departure home, a good
day was had by all. And on a personal note this was an unforgettable
experience and I would strongly recommend anyone to do this
run.

As Motorboat Development
Officer for the ISA (National body for Sailing and Boating in

to Lough Derg Jet Ski Club. In time, history will shown that
the establishment of clubs such as this one will be a key element
in the development of PWC use in Ireland.

to introduce a new PWC training scheme, More details to follow.
If you are interested in forming a club or want
to know details about clubs in your area, please send me an
